TODAY'S OBECTIVES

  • define and explain terms on definitions document
  • draw as many unique shapes made of 4 cubes (ie. all same V)

CLASS LESSON

Science terms; Learning to use limited components to build variety of shapes (developing spatial skills) with 4 cubes

  1. Teach and write definitions for terms (see definition document)
  2. Give students assignment to "sketch as many different shapes made of four 1 cm^3 cubes as possible.  Each shape should be made only of cubes; all cubes should touch full face-no off set faces-and no triangles.  Students may use "dot paper"
  3. After students have sketched at least 5 shapes, then give them a grade for completion. (This is a chance to give direction to students who are having trouble sketching.)
  4. Students draw up to 7 unique net shapes (above was sketches; now "nets.")  Grading for assignment as follows:  A+=7 shapes; A=6 shapes; B=5 shapes; C=4 shapes; D=3 shapes; less than 3 shapes must come in after school on Tuesday to finish.  [Shapes may not be built at home; no way to verify builder...]
  5. Students build their shapes out of 1 cm graph paper.  As students bring up shapes for assessment, check the shape, give grade, discard shape (to prevent copying or re-use by other students).
  6. Announce-next period short formative drawing quiz (on blank unlined paper) and scissor summative "quiz"-bring scissors.

ASSIGNMENT

  1. Students draw at least six unique nets for shape B (they should not be mirror images of each other nor have rotational symmetry).
  2. Calculate the SA and V in cm of shapes B-D.
